About Seasons Hospice Foundation, A note from Teri Schmitchen, CVA
Seasons Hospice Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation. Founded in 2011, our mission is to bring comfort and support to hospice patients and their families through programs and initiatives that are not covered under private insurance or Medicare. Our funds support patient wish fulfillment, special programs, community education to increase awareness about the benefits of hospice, and applied research to improve the quality of hospice care. Extending beyond the borders of traditional healthcare, we treat the whole person and their loved ones in ways that touch the human spirit—adding days to life and life to days.
Camp Kangaroo Program
Loss and grief have a far reaching impact on children and families. Research has shown that 1 in 9 Americans experience the death of a parent before they turn 20 while 1 in 7 lose either a parent or a sibling. The loss of a loved one is difficult for a child. Many children struggle at school in the aftermath of a loved one’s death and often need more support. Some children act out in unproductive and potentially dangerous ways. Seasons Hospice Foundation partners with Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care to provide Camp Kangaroo to the Southeast Michigan community. Camp Kangaroo is a bereavement camp experience provided free of charge for children in the community who have suffered the death of a loved one. Our Camp Kangaroo program is designed to help children feel less alone in their grief, to provide them with a supportive environment to express their emotions, and to help them learn effective coping strategies. Grief and loss affects the whole family system. We provide an Adult Group for parents and guardians to teach them about common grief reactions in children and offer ways for them to support their children at home. This also allows the adults to process their own grief in a supportive environment. Positive coping strategies for the family are reinforced. In this way, we can support the family in their journey through grief. Our next camp in Michigan will be taking place in January 2016.
